Health insurance is not something a lot of students tend to give much consideration to. After all, when you are young and healthy you don’t usually worry about potential health issues.
Yet the truth is you never know when you could need medical treatment and most people would agree that there is nothing worse than needing this when you are away from home for the first time. This is why you should definitely consider the prospect of purchasing an international health insurance plan.
International medical insurance plans give policyholders access to high-quality health care irrespective of where in the world they are located. This is particularly beneficial for international students.

Taking out insurance if you are planning to do your studies in another country
Are you planning to study abroad? If so, this type of global health insurance plan will ensure you are covered whilst studying and also whilst visiting your home country. You will even be covered when you go on holiday with your friends to celebrate your exam results! No matter where you are located you will have peace of mind.
If you are studying overseas it is also worth bearing in mind that the standard of state health care may not be what you are used to. Resources may be limited and the overall quality may be poor, which is why it is always a good idea to invest in a worldwide health insurance plan.
Your age can help to lower the cost of your medical insurance when buying as a student
Another reason why a lot of students do not consider international medical insurance plans is because they see it as an unnecessary expense! This is understandable. After all, when you go to university or college the money you have tends to be spent on textbooks and partying! However, did you know that you will likely benefit from really low premiums?
One of the major determining factors when it comes to the cost of your policy is your age and you will have that on your side. So long as you do not have any pre-existing medical conditions there is no reason for your policy to be expensive. This is especially the case if you simply require a basic level of cover.
All in all, if you are leaving home to study or you are already enrolled in further education; you should definitely consider taking out an international health insurance policy. Take a look online and find the best policy for your requirements – one that provides you with the coverage you need and fits in with your budget.

Hello Anne. I am always interested to read about healthcare and insurance in countries outside of my own. I’ve lived in the U.S. my entire life and had insurance for most of it. The one time I let my insurance lapse was when I was a young adult. I was a student with a part-time job and no insurance. I got married to a self-employed man who also did not carry insurance. We intended to get insurance and then I became pregnant, which at the time was considered a pre-existing condition for insurance purposes. We had the baby with little money and no coverage. I remember the hospital office called me the day I was to be released and asked how I wanted to pay my bill. I said I didn’t have the money and would need to make payments. They told me I would not be released until I could pay for the room. I responded that I hope they didn’t need that room for awhile, because I would be staying for a few months! That changed their tune, and they quickly arranged a payment schedule, which I met in full. Things have changed since then. For one thing, children can stay on their parent’s coverage until they turn 26! Also, pre-existing conditions are no longer considered when issuing insurance, though there are open enrollment rules that must be followed to prevent people from jumping on a plan every time they need services and then jumping off again. I would never go without insurance now. In fact today, I work for a health insurance company and have done so for more than 20 years! Thank you for addressing this important topic.
We are so lucky to have the NHS. Health insurance comes as a big shock to students studying abroad.
