Essential Steps to prepare for long-term travel

Going travelling for a long period of time can be both very exciting and quite frightening. If you have never done this before and you are thinking about doing it at some point in the near future, then you will need to be fully prepared for it before you actually go. There are many things that you have to do to make sure you approach it in the right way. In this post, I will take a look at some of the steps you should take to ensure that you are ready for long-term travel, and that you have prepared well for it too.

Check your passport

You need to check that your passport is up to date and has at least six months left on it after your expected date of return. Check government websites for visa requirements, and for any travel warnings, advice or recommendations.

Get Insured

You should definitely always have travel insurance whenever you are going anywhere for any length of time. But it is especially important if you are going to be travelling for a long period of time, because the chances of something untoward happening are going to be that little bit higher. Make sure that you find a policy which is suitable for long-term multitrip events, and that you are informing them of any pre-existing conditions, otherwise it might prove invalid if you go to make a claim. It’s definitely worth the cost of insurance for that peace of mind. You should save a copy of your insurance documents and passport details to your phone and also Email a copy to a friend or family member.

Check Your Vaccinations

It’s also really important to make sure that you are fully vaccinated for everything you need to be vaccinated for. That will include covid, as well as the normal flu jab, but also any specific ones that you might need to have for wherever you are going. To be safe, it’s wise to make sure you have all of the generic vaccines that people tend to get, from yellow fever to tetanus and so on too. Once you have all these, you are going to be much safer when you are travelling around the world.

Stock up on medications

If you are travelling for any length of time you need to make sure you have enough medications for your journey. If possible, you should keep any tablets in their original packaging and bring any prescriptions with you.

Write Your Will

It might sound dark, but it’s actually a really good idea to make sure that you have a will in place before you go. If you are going for a long time, you don’t know what might happen, and if the worst happens then you will want your dependents and loved ones to get what they deserve from your estate. So as soon as possible you should consider contacting someone like wills & probate solicitors Norton Peskett to help you write out your will. You should do this long before you actually leave the country for your big trip.

Tell your bank

You should definitely inform your bank that you will be travelling. My daughter forgot to do this and had her debit card blocked in the Czech Republic.

Make sure your mobile phone is unlocked

If your phone is unlocked you will be able to purchase a local sim card when you get to your destination.

Secure Your Home

If there is going to be nobody at home while you are away, then you really need to make sure that you are taking full care of it as best as you can, by securing it properly before you go. It’s best if you can have an eye on it, but at the very least make sure that you lock up, and perhaps consider using a timer on a light to make it look as though you are home too. You don’t want to have to worry about your home when you are away travelling,
